ONLINE LEARNING TOOLS IDEATION
learning tools / research / illustration
Being a part of the Technology for Social Good Research and Design lab, I was able to take part in meetings with the Cyberlearning team, during which we often took part in design exercises surrounding the online social learning network iRemix. One of these exercises required lab members to brainstorm ideas for the system that would facilitate the online support role of brokering. To better visualize some of the ideas from this workshop, I created the storyboard and interface designs shown below.
OBJECTIVES To create visualizations that represent the ideas created during the design workshop
TOOLS Adobe Photoshop, Axure RP Pro
SKILLS Illustration, Digital Media, UX Design
PLATFORM Digital storyboard and wireframes
CONTEXT Design workshop piece for TSG Research and Design Lab. Completed as part of the Cyberlearning Team at TSG Research and Design Lab
One of the ideas discussed during this design workshop is a tool that would provide students with opportunities and connect them with classmates based on their interests. These interests would be decided by analyzing the students' submitted projects or through a survey they complete. In order to better illustrate how this tool might affect a student’s experience with the system, I created the following storyboard. This 4 panel storyboard illustrates a young student who is interested in fashion. She is notified of an opportunity to attend a fashion-related event with a classmate who has similar interests, and the two becomes close friends who pursue this interest together.
To create this storyboard, I first sketched out each panel in pencil, and then used illustration markers to finalize the lineart. I then scanned this image and used Adobe Photoshop to add shading and cleanups if necessary. Creating this storyboard allowed me to visualize the emotional impact a piece of technology can have on a user. I realized that presenting an idea in this way is important for understanding its possibilities. Without methods such as storyboarding, the potential of a design may never be realized.
INTERFACE SKETCHES & WIREFRAMES
As a continuation of this workshop, I developed ideas for more tools that would enable brokering in online learning systems and created interface sketches and wireframes to visualize them.
Program Finder Mobile Application
A major point of discussion during this meeting was identifying reasons why parents, instructors, and mentors are unable to provide opportunities to students. Oftentimes a parent may not be able to act as a broker because they do not know how to find local programs and opportunities for children. This application would be specifically designed to assist users in finding local programs based on interest topics.
This tool would prompt students to reflect on their portfolio work and provide recommendations for projects to start based on those reflections. Their rankings will affect the visual layout of the student's portfolio, providing students with a visual way to explore and understand their interests.
